Rooted in History: Crawford County Plants White Oak for America 250

On October 3rd, the Crawford County History Alliance (CCHA) and the Crawford Park District joined forces for a ceremony that was as much about the future as it was about the past. Beneath the autumn sky at Heckert Nature Preserve, a young White Oak was planted—not just as a piece of landscaping, but as a living monument to the American spirit.

This event is a key part of the “Heritage Trees: Planting History Program,” a statewide initiative leading up to the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026. By planting these trees, Ohio is creating a “living legacy” that will grow alongside our community for centuries to come.

The Significance of the White Oak

As reported by Crawford County Now leading up to the event, the choice of a White Oak was deeply intentional. The White Oak is the official state tree of Illinois and Maryland, but in Ohio, it is revered for its longevity and strength—some specimens are known to live for over 400 years.

By selecting the Heckert Nature Preserve as the site, the CCHA ensured the tree would be placed in a protected environment where it can serve as a focal point for reflection on Crawford County’s natural and civic history.

A Community Coming Together

The post-event coverage captured the poignant atmosphere of the ceremony. The event drew local leaders, history enthusiasts, and nature lovers who gathered to witness the dedication.

Lori Morey, Director of the Crawford Park District, noted that the tree acts as a bridge between generations. During the ceremony, speakers highlighted how the tree symbolizes the resilience of the American people. Just as the oak’s roots will spread deep into the soil of Heckert Nature Preserve, our local history provides the foundation for the liberties we celebrate today.

Part of a Larger Story

This planting is one of many milestones on Crawford County’s journey toward 2026. It joins the America 250-OH Kickoff and the CCHA Passport Program as ways for residents to engage with our heritage.

The “Heritage Trees: Planting History” program aims to have a commemorative tree in every one of Ohio’s 88 counties. Crawford County is proud to be among the leaders in this effort, ensuring that when the national “Big Birthday Bash” arrives on July 4, 2026, we have a growing, breathing symbol of our commitment to preservation.
